National foreword This document (EN IS0 14405-1:2016) has been prepared by Technical Committee IS0/TC 213 "Dimensional and geometrical product specifications and verification", Working Group WG 12 “Size", in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 290 “Dimensional and geometrical product specification and verification" (Secretariat: AFNOR, France). The responsible German body involved in its preparation was DIN-Normenausschuss Technische Grundlagen (DIN Standards Committee Technical Fundamentals), Working Committee NA 152-03-02 AA "CEN/ISO Geometrical product specifications and verification". Previously, according to DIN 7167 the envelope requirement applied for all features of size given in drawings based on the relevant DIN Standards, where not otherwise stated in the drawing. This includes features of size such as cylinders and widths such as slot width, groove width, tongue width and spring width. DIN 7167 had to be withdrawn because the new standards IS0 8015 (new edition in preparation) and IS0 14405-1 and IS0 286-1 lay down the “principle of independency" as in IS0 8015 as a “default" principle, and these standards had to be adopted as DIN EN ISO Standards. This means that ± tolerances and ISO codes such as H7 are two-point sizes unless otherwise indicated, e.g. by the modifier E. If older drawings based on DIN 7167 are to be used, a special indication should be added to avoid misunderstanding, e.g. by adding Size IS0 14405 ? Previous indications such as DIN 7167 or ISO 2768-mK-E fulfil the same purpose.
